چکیده

Ships and submarines radiate sound into the water as an inevitable by-product of the mechanical energy required to propel them. For military surface vessels the characteritics of the radiated underwater sound can be a critical factor in determining the vulnerability of the vessel to detection, and consequently considerable effort is put into characterising and minimising the radiation from these vessels.

Using a Towed Array to Localise and Quantify Underwater Sound Radiated by the Tow-vessel

This paper presents the results of a study aimed at determining the feasibility of using a towed array of hydrophones to localise and quantify sound sources on the tow-vessel. The method requires the tow-vessel to execute a manoeuvre in order to bring the array into a suitable geometry to allow it to image the tow-vessel. Previous work has focussed on a scenario where the tow-vessel executes a ...

Adaptive Beamforming of a Towed Array During a Turn

During maneuvering, towed array beamforming degrades if a straight array is assumed. This is especially true for high-resolution adaptive beamforming. It is experimentally demonstrated that adaptive beamforming is feasible on a turning array, provided that array shape is estimated. The array shape can be inferred solely from the coordinates of the tow vessel’s Global Positioning System (GPS) wi...

15: Broadband Field Directionally Mapping using Maneuverable Acoustic Sensor Arrays

Current passive sonar methods are designed for static fixed or straight towed arrays. Signal processing approaches for such systems are thus seriously degraded by platform maneuvers. In this project, the objectives are to: 1) exploit small platform maneuverability using small broadband acoustic arrays to resolve targets from interferers, and 2) improve the target detection, localization, and tr...

Effect of Underwater Ambient Noise on Quadraphase Phase-shift Keying Acoustic Sensor Network Links in Extremely Low Frequency Band

This study evaluates the impact of underwater ambient noise using seven real noise samples; Dolphin, Rain, Ferry, Sonar, Bubbles, Lightning, and Outboard Motor in three frequency ranges in extremely low frequency (ELF) band. The ELF band is the most significant bandwidth for underwater long-range communication. ELF band which is extended from 3 to 3000 Hz clearly, faces bandwidth limitation. Me...

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics

This paper addresses the problem of towed array shape estimation for passive, horizontal sonar arrays. Beamforming and localization techniques significantly degrade when an assumed linear array bends due to tow platform maneuvers or ocean currents. In this paper, heading sensors along the array and acoustic hydrophone data are jointly used to estimate the shape of the array. Previously, heading...
